On 16th. ultimo Mr. D. R. Mackenzie called on the Colonial Secretary and informed him on your behalf that Messrs. Jardine, Matheson & Company have become Agents for the Marconi Company in the Far East, and that Mr. Watts a "Wireless Expert* would shortly arrive here. I understand that he is now in Hong- -kong and leaves on 24th. instant. You are aware that the Chamber of Commerce have urged upon the Government the necessity of providing a Commercial Wireless Station in Hongkong, and that the matter has also been pressed in the Legislative Council. I am directed by His Excellency the Governor to inform you that he has been in communication on this subject with the Secretary of State and with the Naval Authorities for some time past, with a view to ascertaining the intentions of the Imperial Government, with the result that it is understood that both a High Power and Low Power Station will eventually be erected here. The Admiral Commanding-in-Chief advised His Excellency that any Commercial Station which might be erected, should be undertaken independently of these Imperial Stations, and at such a distance from them as not to interfere with them. His Excellency therefore at the suggestion of Admiral Winsloe appointed a Committee of Naval, Military and Civil experts to determine the best site for an Imperial High Power Station, and he has just received their report. It is not of .course possible to say for certain that the site which they recommend will be accepted, but it may be considered extremely probable that it will.
In these circumstances it seems to His Excellency very desirable to form some reliable estimate of the cost of erecting a Commercial Station, its possible location and the
